Coral Gables
Coral Gables, also known as The City Beautiful or The Gables, was one of Miami’s first planned communities when it was incorporated in 1925. It was developed by George Edgar Merrick during Florida’s land boom in the 1920′s. One of the more notable and popular features is the city’s Mediterranean architecture. With it’s strict zoning regulations, canopy tree-lined streets and beautiful landscaping, it is home to over 42,000 residents (according to a 2000 census).
The City of Coral Gables has 2 golf courses, 31 tennis courts, 26 parks throughout the city and numerous basketball courts. Coral Gables is also home to the University of Miami and sits on 240 acres of land just west of U.S. 1. Among the landmarks in Coral Gables are the Venetian Pool, Douglas Entrance, and the Biltmore Hotel.
In downtown Coral Gables, the Miracle Mile area provides residents, business people, and visitors alike with outdoor cafes, family and upscale restaurants, specialty boutiques for shopping, museums and entertainment venues. Similarly, the Village of Merrick Park, built in 2002, offers upscale shopping and dining throughout it’s 3 story center. Some of it’s tenants include Burberry, Carolina Herrera, Coach, Tiffany & Co., and Diane von Furstenberg to name a few.
